- Set the thermostat to Off, not to a colder number. Cooling has to stop before anything melts.
- Switch the fan from Auto to On. Room air blowing over the coil melts ice faster than still air does, and no compressor is running.
- Pull the filter out and hold it up to a light. If you cannot see light through it, that is very likely your whole problem. Put a clean one in now.
- Walk the house and open every supply vent and return grille. Move the rug off the return, pull the couch off the vent, open the closed bedroom doors.
- Check under the air handler while it melts. Ice becomes water, and that water has to reach the drain pan and leave through the drain line.
Once the coil is bare metal again, run the system and watch it for a day. A freeze that never comes back was an airflow problem you already fixed. A freeze that returns is telling you something else is wrong.
Two things to skip while you wait: do not chip or scrape the ice, and do not pull the breaker and hope the system resets itself. Coil tubing is thin aluminum and copper, and a hole in it lets the refrigerant out for good.
6 reasons an air conditioner freezes up in a Florida home
These are the causes we actually find, roughly in the order we find them.
- A filter nobody has changed since spring. The filter is the first thing air passes through, so when it loads up, the coil gets starved. In a house with a dog and a family, a one inch filter can be finished in a month.
- Closed vents and a blocked return. Shutting vents in the guest rooms feels like saving money, while the system still tries to move the same amount of air through a smaller opening. Furniture parked over a return grille does the same thing.

One cause you can cross off in Southeast Florida: almost every article on this topic warns you about running an air conditioner when it is below 60 degrees outside. That is real, and it is a northern problem. "Can I just add refrigerant myself?"

Skip it. Warm air aimed at one spot melts unevenly, and you are holding an electrical appliance over a wet metal cabinet. The fan setting on your thermostat does the same job safely, using room air the system is built to move.
Will one freeze-up damage the compressor?
One short freeze that you caught and shut off is usually fine. The risk comes from running frozen for hours, because refrigerant that should reach the compressor as a gas can arrive as liquid, and liquid does not compress. My outdoor unit is iced up, not the coil inside. Is that different?
