Something in the house started making a sound it has never made before. Maybe it is a bang from the closet every time the system kicks on, or the unit outside grinding like a blender with a spoon in it. The house is still cooling, so part of you wants to leave it alone until the weekend. The other part is already pricing a new compressor in your head. Is it safe to keep running? Is this the cheap fix or the expensive one? Here is the useful part. A noise is not a mystery. Each one points at a short list of parts. Short answer
A loud new noise from your air conditioner is almost always one of three things: a part that has come loose, a motor bearing wearing out, or an electrical part failing. The sound tells you which one.
- Three sounds mean stop right now: banging, grinding, and screeching. Turn the cooling off at the thermostat, then switch off the breaker.
- Everything else can wait a few days. The table further down says how long each sound can wait.
- Find out which machine is making the noise before you call anybody. Set the thermostat to fan only and listen again.
- Loud is not the same as broken. Your outdoor unit has a sound rating from the factory that you can look up.
Where that comes from: the air conditioning manufacturers wrote a shared rule for sound testing, and every outdoor unit gets tested against it before it is sold. So there is already a published number for how loud yours is supposed to be. We get to that below. Why those three cannot wait
Most noises can wait a few days. Banging, grinding, and screeching cannot, and all three come back to the same thing. Metal is wearing against metal every minute the system runs.
Here is what is going on in there. A motor shaft never touches the frame it spins inside. The shaft rides on bearings, and those bearings are packed with grease. Over the years the grease wears away. Once the grease is gone, the shaft rides on bare metal. Grinding is the sound of that happening, and screeching is the same worn bearing a little further along. Catch a motor at that stage and you replace one part. Let the motor keep running and it wrecks the parts around it.
A bang comes from a different machine, but the idea is the same. The compressor does not sit flat on the floor of the outdoor cabinet. The compressor hangs on springs, so its shaking stays inside the unit instead of traveling into your house. When one of those springs gives out, the compressor swings as it runs and knocks against the cabinet wall.
So turn the cooling off at the thermostat, then switch off the breaker labeled for the air handler or the condenser. Your house will get warm tonight. Run the system anyway and you turn a one-part repair into a three-part repair.
What each sound usually means

There is one row on that list people most want to handle themselves, and it happens to be the row you legally cannot. Federal rules say nobody servicing an appliance may knowingly vent or otherwise release refrigerant into the environment, and buying refrigerant at all takes an EPA certification, so there is no can of anything you can pick up at a store. Inside or outside? Find that first
Before anything else, work out which half of the system is making the sound. Working that out cuts the list of suspects in half, and it is also the first question a technician will ask you.
Your air conditioner is two machines connected by pipes. One of them stands in a closet, a garage, or the attic, and that machine is called the air handler. The blower sits inside that cabinet. A blower is a fan wheel, and it pushes cold air into your ducts. The second machine sits outside on a concrete pad, and it holds two parts worth knowing. The compressor pumps the refrigerant. The big fan on top pushes heat out through the grille.
So walk to the closet and listen, then walk outside and listen. Whichever one is louder is the half that needs work. If the sound seems to be everywhere, have somebody set the thermostat to fan only. That shuts the outdoor unit down and leaves the indoor blower running, so anything you still hear is coming from inside.
Two more things narrow it down before anybody opens a panel. If your thermostat lets you change the fan speed, move it up and down and listen. A sound that rises and falls with the fan speed is coming from something that spins, so you are looking at a motor or a blower wheel. Then notice when the sound happens. A noise that only shows up in the first second after the system starts, or the last second before it stops, is usually an electrical part switching rather than anything turning.
How loud is your AC supposed to be?
Here is a number almost nobody knows they already have.
Every outdoor air conditioner and heat pump sold here gets sound tested before it goes on the market. Here is how that test works. The unit is put in a room built for measuring sound and run at its normal cooling setting. Microphones measure what the unit puts out across the whole range of pitches. Those measurements become one number in decibels, and that number goes on the spec sheet.
The companies that build air conditioners run a group called the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute. Most people just say AHRI. The rule they wrote for this test is AHRI Standard 270, and the 2025 edition says two useful things. A unit that has been tested may not be louder than the number the manufacturer published for it. And any brochure quoting a sound number has to print the line "Rated in accordance with AHRI Standard 270 (SI/I-P)". That line is how you tell a real rating from a marketing claim.
Now the part that trips people up. That published number is sound power, which describes how much sound the machine makes in total. It is not what your ear picks up standing on the patio. What you hear depends on how far away you are, whether the unit sits against a wall, and what else is around it. So a decibel app on your phone will not match the spec sheet, and it never could. Do not use one to decide whether your unit is broken.
Here is what the rating is actually good for. Look your model number up in the free AHRI directory, write the sound rating down, then look up the model on the quote a contractor hands you and put the two numbers side by side. That is how you find out whether the new system will be quieter than the one you have, before you sign anything. Two reasons these calls stack up in September
Across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach, the noise calls we take this month come down to two things, and neither one is a coincidence.
- Your system has run almost nonstop since May. Miami still averages a high of 89 degrees on September 14, going by the National Weather Service 1991 to 2020 normals, so nothing has had a night off. Bearings that were quiet in May have four more months on them now.
- Power comes back after an outage and everything restarts at once. A part that was already weak in August often does not survive that restart, which is why the week after a storm is our busiest.
Both come down to the same thing. September does not wear those parts out. September only finds the ones that were already worn.
What you can safely check yourself
Four things, none of them involving an electrical panel or a fan.
- Change the filter if you cannot see light through it. A blower pulling air through a blocked filter roars and whistles. ENERGY STAR tells homeowners to inspect, clean, or change air filters once a month, and a noisy blower is one of the reasons why.
- Look down through the top grille of the outdoor unit from a step back. Leaves and twigs are easy to spot. Do not reach in, and do not poke anything through the grille, even with the unit off.
- Note when the noise happens. Only at startup, only at shutdown, or the whole time it runs. That one sentence saves a technician twenty minutes of guessing.
- Look at the concrete pad under the outdoor unit. A pad that has sunk on one side leaves the cabinet sitting crooked, and a crooked cabinet rattles. You can see the tilt from the walkway.
Everything past that list needs someone licensed, and in Florida that is not a formality. State law makes it illegal to act in the capacity of a contractor without being registered or certified. Is it safe to sleep with a noisy AC running?
Depends which row of the table you are on. Anything marked a few days will not get worse between now and morning. If you are on a row that says shut it off, sleep warm for one night, because eight more hours of running is what decides whether a technician replaces one part or three. And do not turn a system back on because it went quiet on its own. A noise that stops by itself usually means the part finished breaking.
My AC got louder right after it was serviced. What happened?
Usually a panel that went back on without every screw, so it buzzes against the cabinet. Sometimes it is the fan guard. Call whoever did the work, because it is a two-minute fix and it should not cost you anything.
Can I build a fence or put a blanket around the outdoor unit to quiet it down?
A screen is fine if you keep real clearance on every side and leave the top wide open. The outdoor unit throws heat straight up, so anything over it makes the system work harder and run hotter. Check the clearance in your model's installation manual before you build, and never wrap a running unit in anything.
Does the noise tell you how much the repair will cost?
